The first thing I see in Oxford reminds me of work...
The Eagle and Child pub is where the Inklings, among them a certain JRR Tolkien, would meet.
(My thanks go to Graeme who located the pub for me. It is on St Giles street.)
The round building is the Sheldonian Theatre.
the courtyard of the Bodleian Library
In the centre you see part of Merton College where Tolkien taught.
Wolvercote Cemetery to the north of Oxford (again, my thanks to Graeme), where Beren and Luthien (aka JRR Tolkien and his wife Edith) are buried.
When you stand on the hillside near the White Horse of Uffington, you have a fantastic view (but I don't have the patience to make a panorama), and you can see as far as the Cotswolds.
This funny-looking hill is said either to be the site where St-George slew the dragon (where the dragon's blood spilled, nothing grows any more)
or the place where Uther Pendragon (father of Arthur) is buried. Take your pick.
Now this is the really old White Horse, it dates back to the Bronze Age. The only way you can really see it (contrary to the more recent ones we've seen) is from the air. (Thank you Google. Yann Arthus-Bertrand also has a fabuluos photo in his "Earth from the air" series.)
To the right you see the remains of what is now called Uffington Castle. Probably a fort similar to Old Sarum, given the commanding view of the surroundings.
