Holidays in south-west England August 08 to 22, 2009
Wednesday August 12
Now here for once the weather was adequate. I can't really imagine the Dartmoor in the sun.
The first animals that come to mind are of course the Dartmoor ponies, but there are also lots of sheep, reminding me of Scotland and Ireland (as does the landscape), and to our delight, there were also cows! We found a website saying the black ones are Welsh Black Cross Breeds, so we believe that's what they are.
At any rate, in this weather, once you pass the cattle grid, you take Moor Care, since you never know what might cross your path.

The entrance to Dartmoor Prison, and the same seen from the back.
And the animal inhabitants of Dartmoor.

Did you know that not only the Mayflower (1620) left from Plymouth for the Colonies, but also the Tory (1839) to New Zealand, and a Sir Humphrey Gilbert (in an unnamed vessel) in 1583 to Newfoundland and Labrador (now part of Canada).
I certainly didn't.

Oh, and that toll bridge out of Plymouth apparently is toll-free when you leave town (at least in the evening).
